City Tour
Mahane Yehuda
. 9:30 tour start
Arrival
Flight out from Cyprus at 6:35. A little extra security, but implemented in a slightly Greek way, so we had to stand in a second line to be told to get out of line and answer some security questions. Then we were asked by the gate attendant if we had return tickets...even though the computer should show that we did (vs us showing something we could have written in crayon?).
More than average turbulence...plane dropped enough that my phone floated out of my hand, but most folks were like "whooaah!" Like on a rollercoaster with smiling thrill vs "aaaaaaahhhh! We're going to die!" Big (yet slightly nervous) smiles on the girls.
Exceptionally long disembarking...were they offloading and scanning all luggage before letting people off?
Quized about Lebanon trip last week.
9pm bus (#485, ben gurion airport to Jerusalem central bus, Term 3?, second level. 16 shekels for over 5yr old. Cash/change given. ).
Highway crossed thru the West Bank on the way to Jerusalem, but didn't stop.(photo)
Cab from the bus stop to hotel, 50 shkek. While Kacey got the kids ready for bed, get popped over to be look for some food at First Station, an old train station that has been converted into a restaurant / lifestyle space. None of the restaurants appeared to offer take-away, but there was an organic market place. 90 shekels later, he had the ingredients for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.that's $25 dollars for: jar of peanut butter, jar of jelly, bread, rice cakes, and a probiotic yogurt drink (which turned out to be made from goat milk).
Holy Land Tour
10am, first stop - city overview, mount of olives and mount scopus. iPad with images/ symbols during guide's talk - holy Land cross (5 crosses). Oil press church gatsemonie / Jewish cemetery Schindler's grave nearby..guide said "if you don't know Schindler, you should read more." Holy seplicher- crowded like Kandy Western wall is closest you can get to good, holy of holies in back of temple. Restaurant roof top for lunch. falafel and chicken schwarma. Hot in sunshine, cold in breeze/overcast sky
Exploring Jerusalem
Departed tour group after lunch, ~2pm. Made plans to take the tram up to Yad Vashem. Got to tram stop, while figuring out fares, a guy gave us two Tix and said that the museum they were going to was closed. Asked the guy what museum, and he said the Holocaust museum. Same as us. Another woman confirmed it was on the website. So we looked it up and buried deep inside the site, yes, it closed at noon today for a 5pm special event. Tomorrow is Yom HaShoah/Holocaust Memorial Day in Israel, and it will be open.
After yad Vashem attempt, went back to Muslim quarter to get the "visit Palestine" card we saw...hard to find elsewhere. :) After Muslim quarter, caught cab from Damascus gate to Mahane Yehuda Market.
Had a snack there (Kacey photo), then ice cream, before we walked around looking at the fresh produce and market atmosphere (cat above stand). got three mixes of dried, cubed fruit that was like lemon mint, apple cider, and "exotic" fruit that reminded us of gummi bears.
Walked back from the Mahane Yehuda market to our hotel, cutting thru a park that had a nice arbor? Walkway.
News while we were there: Trump Promises Strike on Syria and Warns Russia Against Backing Assad https://nyti.ms/2HrJGTZ https://www.independent.co.uk/travel/news-and-advice/syria-military-action-mediterranean-holidays-airlines-flights-disruption-cyprus-larnaca-paphos-a8298851.html Hotel owner stopped by to inform us that restaurants and places of entertainment would be closed tonight due to Yom HaShoah tomorrow. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yom_HaShoah
